Starting July 1, online poker sites wishing to operate in Denmark will require a licence. The snag is that these licenses won’t be available to the foreign sites until January 1, 2011; meaning that the government backed Danske Spil site will have free reign for six months.

According to Danish magazine Ace, the government has warned that it will “take measures” to ensure that players don’t participate in games on sites that are lacking the appropriate licence.

This has lead to warnings from Danish players that money should be withdrawn before July 1 in case withdrawal at a later date becomes an issue. Of course, they go on to say that censoring the Internet is hardly an easy operation and could well be “scare tactics” by the government to try and get players on to the government backed site.
